Elysian Brewing Space Dust American IPA at 7.2% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 650ml, no bottle date or best before)

Pours clear pale gold with two fingers of rocky white head, excellent retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel malt, citrus, pine, tropical fruits. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitter finish. (4/5)

That is one big solid beefy IPA. I honestly don’t know why this isn’t called a DIPA – the hop load and the ABV are both more suited to a double than a single. It’s well done, and reasonably well balanced, but a bit more malt-forward than I prefer. (16/20)

Steamworks Brewing Company Steamworks Pilsner Pilsener at 5.0% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 500ml, no can date or best before)

Pours clear pale straw with one finger of loose white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is light sweet crackery malt, citrus, grassy and herbal hops. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Light body, moderate carbonation, dry bitter finish. (3/5)

Not bad. I mean, no pilsener is ever going to be great, that’s a given – but this is OK. For a fizzy yellow beer. Pleasant citrus and herbal hops on the front end, and a not-insignificant bitterness (can says 30 IBU) on the finish. Worth a try. (14/20)

Grupo Modelo (Corona) Negra Modelo Vienna Lager at 5.3% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 355ml, bottle date 17-Jul-2014)

Pours clear medium amber with one finger of dense ivory head, excellent retention, and heavy lacing. (4/5) Nose is mild roasty malts and caramel. (4/10) Taste is medium sweet, mild bitter. (4/10) Light to watery body, moderate carbonation, mild bitter finish. (3/5)

Fairly bland, with a malty aftertaste that isn’t all that great. Can’t say I’d recommend it or bother with another one. Probably the best thing Corona makes, though! (10/20)

Village Brewery Brünette Dunkelweizen at 5.5% ABV (Gift, 330ml, bottle date 9-Oct-2014)

Pours hazy brown with one finger of tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (3/5) Nose is muted, some bubblegum and bananas, doughy yeast, cloves. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Medium to light body, moderate carbonation, malty sweet finish. (3/5)

Nice coffee tones from the dark malt in a surprisingly light body for the colour. It’s no Weihenstephaner or Erdinger, but it’s not bad with dinner. Decent product from a local brewer, and if I had someone to share with, I’d probably try one or two of their other styles in a growler. (12/20)

Duvel Moortgat Vedett Extra White Witbier at 4.7% ABV ($3.50 at Willow Park Wine & Spirits, 330ml, best before 05/2015)

Pours cloudy pale straw with one finger of white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is citrus peel, cloves, banana. (6/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate bitter. (6/10) Light body, moderate to low carbonation, lingering bitter and dry finish. (3/5)

A very mild mannered wit with a pleasant orange peel bitterness in the finish. Nothing all that interesting, and certainly none of the spicy pepperiness associated with some witbiers, but a pleasant drink with lunch. This is pretty clearly what some of the domestic whites served with an orange slice (I’m looking at you, Blue Moon and Rickard’s) aspire to. (And fail to achieve.) (12/20)

Nice light-bodied IPA with decent bitterness. Smells a bit better than it tastes, but a solid performer. (14/20)

Big Rock Brewery Winter Spice Ale Winter Warmer at 6% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 330ml, no bottle date or best before)

Pours clear medium amber with a thin light tan head, excellent retention, patchy lacing. (3/5) Nose is typical gingerbread spice, caramel malt and brown sugar. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (5/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation. (3/5)

Pretty standard winter warmer – typical gingerbread spices and sugar. Inoffensive and unremarkable. (10/20)

Deschutes Brewery Mirror Pond Pale Ale American Pale Ale at 5% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 355ml, best before 18-Mar-2015)

Quite nice. The aroma, though somewhat less muted than other APA’s, is pleasantly hop forward, but nicely balanced by caramel malt. The taste is again very well-behaved, balanced more towards hop bitterness, but with sufficient malt sweetness to support it. The finish is the only relative weak point in this brew, with just a little bit of an unbalanced astringency in the aftertaste. Other than that, a very mild and drinkable APA. I guess the solution is to not stop drinking them? (14/20)

Oskar Blues Brewery Dale’s Pale Ale American Pale Ale at 6.5% ABV ($3.50 at South Trail Co-Op, 355ml, can date 17-Nov-2014)

Nice starts-with-C hops in the nose and pleasant bittering on the tongue. Big without being overwhelming, flavourful without being a hop bomb (though at 65 IBU’s, some might disagree with me). Not sure when you saw it off and call it an IPA instead of an APA – personally I think this thing comes close to an A/DIPA, to be honest – but it’s nice no matter what you call it. And for it’s target use – backpacking etc., where glass bottles aren’t an option – there’s not much better out there… other than Heady Topper, of course… or their own Ten Fidy… But this is definitely worth bringing a sixpack on your next hike.(16/20)

Brasserie Artisanale de Rulles La Rulles Blonde Belgian Strong Pale Ale at 7% ABV ($10.50 at Sherbrooke Liquor, 750ml, best before 31-Aug-2015)

Pours clear (turning cloudy) straw with two fingers of loose white head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is pale malt, mild Belgian spice, apples and light citrus, mild yeast and grassy hops. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate bitter, mild funk. (8/10) Light body, prickly carbonation, off-dry bitter finish. (4/5)

That’s a heckuva beer – very well-balanced and behaved, with a pleasant bitterness and not too much sweetness. There’s a little funk that’s almost Brett-like in character, in addition to some characteristic Belgian flavours and a honey-like note in the otherwise dry and bitter finish. Side note – the caps on La Rulles beer are made from the hardest substance known to man and can apparently not be removed intact. They’re, like, high-security tamper-proof caps, but given the value of the contents, I guess that’s appropriate. (16/20)
