Fort Garry Brewing Company Kona Imperial Stout American Stout at 6.5% ABV (C$3.09 at Willow Park Wine & Spirits, 473 ml, no canning date or best before)
Pours clear ruby brown with one fat finger of dense tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, moderate boozy alcohol. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Medium body, soft carbonation, astringent and slightly boozy finish. (4/5)
Yeah, not really an “imperial” stout. “Coffee stout”, sure – and not a bad one. But it could stand to be heavier, both in body and in ABV. There’s also a bit of unbalanced astringency coming from the heavy coffee flavour that could stand to be smoothed out, maybe with a bit of lactose. (14/20)
