Hoyne Brewing Co. Devil’s Dream IPA American IPA at 6% ABV (C$7.49 at Oak & Vine, 650 ml, no bottle date or best before, acquired 11-Mar-2017, reviewed 12-Mar-2017)
Appearance: clear pale amber with two fingers of rocky ivory head, excellent retention and soapy moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: resiny pine, caramel/toffee, mango, citrus, black tea. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-high bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium oily body, moderate carbonation, sticky and spicy lingering bitter finish. (3/5)
Despite the big oily and spicy bitter dominating the finish, the malt gives it a run for its money on the front end. It’s not malt dominant, but it is malt heavy. Kind of surprising the ABV is as low as it is, actually, given the way it punches above its weight. I’d like it better if it were brighter and dryer, or maybe just boozier. (14/20)
