Troubled Monk Brewery Juicy Gossip – American IPA at 6.5% ABV

Troubled Monk Brewery Juicy Gossip – American IPA at 6.5% ABV (C$4.50 at Collective, 473 ml, no packaging date or best before, acquired 1-May-2020, reviewed 2-May-2020)

Appearance: bright clear straw with one fat finger of loose off-white head diminishing rapidly to a thin ring, spotty lacing. (3/5) Aroma: citrus, pale malt, melon, light pine. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-low bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry mild bitter finish. (4/5)

Ummm… This is not just clear, but brightly clear. I mean, brilliantly clear. And the flavour profile is more crackery and lager-y, than juicy fruit. This is a rare swing and a miss for Troubled Monk, at least in the sense of hitting the numbers on the style. It’s pleasant enough, but it’s really not an NEIPA. Like, emphatically not an NEIPA. Surprising and a little disappointing. (14/20)
